At UFC 180 Mark Hunt (10-8-1), just the second Australian fighter to challenge for a UFC title in history, is set to battle number-one ranked contender Fabricio Werdum (18-5-1) for the interim heavyweight crown in Mexico City this weekend.
Like usual when the power punching big man steps into the Octagon, he’s the underdog with the bookmakers, and even the most one-eyed supporters of “The Super Samoan” have to admit that he has his back against the wall against “Vai Cavalo”.
The New Zealand-born Aussie took this fight on just two weeks’ notice, had not trained in over a month when he received the last-minute call, has limited time to prepare for the scorching temperatures and high altitude in Mexico, and was a whopping 40 pounds (18kg) over the heavyweight limit.
Given all that, it’s fair to doubt the former K-1 World Grand Prix champion, but most industry insiders agree that Hunt is still in this one with a fighting chance, even if the oddsmakers have him pegged as a four-to-one underdog.
