Some are dubbing the Canelo vs. Chavez Jr. fight as boxing’s “Mexican Super Bowl.” Canelo, the former junior middleweight and middleweight champion, squares off against Chavez Jr., his long-time rival and former middleweight champion, in a catchweight bout of 164.5 pounds from the sold-out T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Canelo (48-1-1, 34 KOs) is currently boxing’s No. 1 attraction. He’s coming off a ninth-round TKO victory over Liam Smith in September. Chavez, 31, (50-2-1, 32 KOs) has had an up-and-down career but finally appears to have everything together. He took a 17-month hiatus between fights and returned with a vengeance back in December, defeating Dominik Britsch by unanimous decision.
